On end degrees and infinite cycles in locally finite graphs

We introduce a natural extension of the vertex degree to ends. For the cycle space C(G) as proposed by Diestel and Kühn [4, 5], which allows for infinite cycles, we prove that the edge set of a locally finite graph G lies in C(G) if and only if every vertex and every end has even degree. In the same way we generalise to locally finite graphs the characterisation of the cycles in a finite graph ...

Finite locally-quasiprimitive graphs

A 1nite graph is said to be locally-quasiprimitive relative to a subgroup G of automorphisms if, for all vertices , the stabiliser in G of is quasiprimitive on the set of vertices adjacent to . (A permutation group is said to be quasiprimitive if all of its non-trivial normal subgroups are transitive.) The graph theoretic condition of local quasiprimitivity is strictly weaker than the condition...

End compactifications and general compactifications

We use the insights of Robinson’s nonstandard analysis as a powerful tool to extend and simplify the construction of compactifications of regular spaces. In particular, we deal with the Stone-Čech compactification and compactifications formed from topological ends. For the nonstandard extension of a metric space, the monad of a standard point x is the set of all points infinitesimally close to ...

Geodesic topological cycles in locally finite graphs

We prove that the topological cycle space C(G) of a locally finite graph G is generated by its geodesic topological circles. We further show that, although the finite cycles of G generate C(G), its finite geodesic cycles need not generate C(G).

Eulerian edge sets in locally finite graphs

In a finite graph, an edge set Z is an element of the cycle space if and only if every vertex has even degree in Z. We extend this basic result to the topological cycle space, which allows infinite circuits, of locally finite graphs. In order to do so, it becomes necessary to attribute a parity to the ends of the graph.
